Helikoosolek #52: Patrick Tubin McGinley
Patrick Tubin McGinley (AKA murmer) is an American-born sound, performance, and radio artist who has been based in Europe since 1996. Since then he has been building a collection of found sounds and found objects that has become the basis of all his work. In 2002 he founded Framework, an organisation that produces a weekly field-recording themed radio show, broad- and podcasting around the world. In 2005 he first visited Estonia, and relocated there permanently in 2009. His work is about small discoveries and concentrated attention; it focuses on the framing of the sounds around us which normally pass through our ears unnoticed and unremarked, but which out of context become unrecognisable, alien and extraordinary: crackling charcoal, a squeaking escalator, a buzzing insect, or one’s own breath. He works equally with spaces, objects, resonances, and people, in composition, performance, or simply collective action and experience, in exploration of perception via attentive listening.

Hans-Gunther Lock gave a lecture based introduction to analogue synthesis in Estonian with Doepfer A-100 modular system. The event took place in collaboration of Helikoosolek and Estonian Electronic Music Society. Theoretical side found it's musical outcome through introduced elements by Hans-Gunther Lock and Jaanus Siniväli.

helikoosolek returns with another of its series of occasional events in tartu, featuring live performances in the amazing setting of the ruins alongside the tartu university museum on toomemägi.

Antez is a percussionist and sound sculptor who explores sound and matter by interrogating the physical perception of sound, and his relation with space and the realm. He is convinced that the capabilities of sonic experimentation with acoustic instruments are without limit. He calls his instruments devices, diverting the objects from their intended use. Antez will be presenting his ongoing performance project ‘Continuum’.
The performer’s comments about Continuum:
“The root of this performance is the playing of the sympathetic resonance of the room structure, individually sculpted according to its architectural singularity, in which the progression of the performance remains permeable to the immediate moment, exclusively using acoustic methods of production and governed by movement which involve the full motor capabilities of the body.
My first challenge, to produce a continuous sound with a percussion instrument, evolved through an investigative exploration of the acoustic gifts of the performance space. A large drum is used as an amplifier, with various implements rubbed on the skin to activate its vibrational potential. These implements are positioned beforehand around the drum for access during my circular walk. After having personally developed this technique for eight years, I've highlighted three key elements in the interrelationship :
.The atmospheric condition of the space and its volume for its influence on the vibration propagation.
.The regularity of the ground levelling
.The specific nature of the audience and the energy which emanates from the venue.
( Energy in the etymological sense of the word "force in action".)
Today my knowledge of materials and shapes allows me to produce sound vibrations that are often compared to some particular sounds from synthesizers. However, the physical perception of my sounds have nothing in common with those issued by a loudspeaker. We are no longer in that frontal relationship as with a soundwave emitted by a membrane. The immersion phenomenon in the sound material is no longer dependent on the power of a sound system, but by the resonance of the surrounding structures.
From larger through to smaller scales, all turns around an axis.
During the performance, mine is the horizontal drum.
The focus of my rotations consciously refers to ancetral rituals used by numerous cultures and civilizations, called sinistrocentric circumambulation.

Taavi Suisalu (1982) is an Estonian artist, who works with technological art, performance and sound art, with an interest in various socio-cultural phenomena and their effect on the behaviour, senses and thinking of social beings. He has studied sociology and computer sciences at Tartu University, and in 2010 he graduated from Department of Media and Advertisement Design at Tartu Art College and received an MA in 2014 from the Department of New Media at the Estonian Academy of Arts.
While listening to the skies, Suisalu has found the peak engineering achievement of the Cold War – abandoned satellites still in orbit. The wonky signals still emitted by these tired devices may be useless in terms of their initial purpose, but they have found an unexpected new life through the artist. Although the basic material is pre-recorded, the sounds heard at the concert will depend on which satellites will be passing above our heads at the time.

dp (aka dave phillips) re/searches and ponders existences and behaviourisms humanimalistically. sound as communication in direct and primal form, a language, a tool of metaphysics, a conscience and a consciousness. opposing the omnipresent restriction and reduction of life and living. sound communications that activate primordial shared emotions otherwise hidden under the debris of civilisation. inviting rumination, encouraging intervention, endorsing catharsis. therapeutical stimulation is acknowledged. sonic activism, ritual protest music.
dp is based in zürich, switzerland and has worked solo as dave phillips/dp since 1987. he is part of schimpfluch-gruppe since 1991 (with rudolfeb.er/runzelstirn & gurgelstøck, joke lanz/sudden infant etc.), co-founded ohne in 2000 (with tom smith, daniel löwenbrück, reto mäder), started the one-man-doom-project dead peni since 2004, co-founded fear of god in 1987 and has played in numerous bands, projects and collaborations.
dp has been sonically active for 30 years, has appeared on more than 200 releases and has played near to 500 concerts in 40 countries.
the VIDEO ACTION he will perform in tartu is an actionistic and physical performance accompanied by visuals. loops and samples of voice and objects are played live over prepared sonic structures and follow a compositional narrative. the visuals communicate personal and existential matters, questions, thoughts and criticisms, on personal, social and global levels. this set is an evocation of 'humanimal', a sonic ritual, a catharsis, an audio-visual exorcism or a type of neo-shamanist healing.

tommi keränen is a noise maker from helsinki. active since the late 1990s, he performs and records as a solo artist, and is a member of testicle hazard, large unit, köttskogen, gentle evil and the truckfuckers. He primary uses primitive electronics and non-standard digital synthesis - the resulting music is rugged slabs of vivid swirling noise. his discography consists of over two dozen entries ranging from cryptic tapes to critically acclaimed releases like the bats in the attic cd (among the wire's rewind picks in 2010). he has collaborated with many artists including florian hecker, the incapacitants, lasse marhaug and phill niblock.

taavi tulev has produced and released several albums of music. he's been making field recordings in nature for many years. besides that, his main work experience is in interior and architectural design and engineering.
creating soundscapes is a symbiosis of those two different fields of work. taavi's ultimate goal is to make urban environments sound better.

daniel allen produces work as an experimental photographer, and latterly an experimental filmmaker. he focuses on the estonian landscape and on human interaction with it, and on estonia as a transition society. these themes are expressed through the shared boundary between abstract painting and abstract photography; through a filmic examination of abandoned soviet military buildings; through modern estonian architecture, and the country's remaining unmodernised traditional industry. he is an analogue film fan and is active in trying to bring experimental film to a wider audience through the experimental film evening, held regularly in tartu.
in 2015 mcginley and allen collected the material for their experimental documentary film about the old papermill in räpina. the material is being used in many different contexts: for the film itself, but also in exhibition, installation, and performance. for this event mcginley will improvise a live mix of field recordings from the mill, while allen will improvise a live mix of the video footage; sound and image react, coincide and conflict in an abstracted anti-representation of space.
